Condemns the violent suppression by police in several districts on August 31, 2019

Justice & Peace Commission of The Hong Kong Catholic Diocese condemns the violent suppression by police in several districts on August 31, 2019

The police opposed public gatherings and marches on August 31, 2019, fired at the masses and used water cannons to suppress them.  In the evening, a group of riot police attacked the public in and around the Prince Edward mass transit railway station, arrested members of the public indiscriminately, causing many injuries.  The police even prevented emergency personnel from providing aid to injured people in the station.  The Commission was very shocked by the incident and severely condemns such violence and abuses!

Since the anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (anti-ELAB) campaign (or the campaign against the amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance), the SAR Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has not responded to the demands of the citizens, while the police have been forced to enforce the law, causing serious social divisions, which has led to hatred and the escalation of hostility among protesters.

In addition, the Chief Executive, Mrs. Carrie Lam, claimed to want dialogue by establishing a dialogue platform to resolve social disputes.  However, the police immediately arrested a number of Legislative Council members and social activists.  These actions make the Government’s claims of wanting sincere communication hard to believe, which instead and in actuality, fuels the anger.

We call for:

1.  The HKSAR Government to immediately withdraw the amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and establish an independent investigation committee to ascertain the truth; suspend the prosecution of all demonstrators before the results of the independent investigation committee.

2.  The police immediately suspend police officers who have abused their powers and stop the violence.

3.  Carry out political reforms outside the framework of the 831 (August 31st, 2014)  of the National People's Congress (of the Peoples Republic of China) and implement double universal suffrage (for the election of the Chief Executive and Legislative Council) to completely resolve social problems.

In addition, we also pray for all the injured and those arrested persons in the incident; hope that they would recover and be released soon.

"But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.!" (Amos 5:24)
